Aconitum bezieht sich medizinisch und naturheilkundlich auf Aconitum napellus, den Blauen Eisenhut, eine in Europa heimische Pflanze.
Aconitum zählt zu den giftigsten Heilpflanzen überhaupt und enthält hochwirksame Alkaloide wie Aconitin. Aufgrund dieser Toxizität ist Aconitum in der klassischen Phytotherapie nicht gebräuchlich und wird ausschließlich in stark verdünnter Form verwendet.
In der Homöopathie gilt Aconitum als Mittel für akut einsetzende Beschwerden, die plötzlich und heftig auftreten. Typische Einsatzgebiete sind plötzliches Fieber, akute Infekte, starke Unruhe, Angstzustände sowie Beschwerden nach Kälteeinwirkung oder Schock. Charakteristisch ist der abrupte Beginn der Symptome, häufig begleitet von innerer Anspannung und Herzklopfen. Die Anwendung erfolgt nach homöopathischen Prinzipien in potenzierter Form, wodurch keine pharmakologische Giftwirkung der Ausgangssubstanz vorliegt.
Aus wissenschaftlicher Sicht existieren keine belastbaren klinischen Belege für eine spezifische Wirksamkeit von Aconitum über Placeboeffekte hinaus. Die Nutzung erfolgt daher ausschließlich im komplementärmedizinischen Kontext. Die Einnahme der unverdünnten Pflanze oder selbst hergestellter Präparate ist strikt abzulehnen, da bereits geringe Mengen lebensbedrohlich sein können.
