Things worth knowing about "Advantame"

Advantame (E969) is a synthetic high-intensity sweetener that is up to 37,000 times sweeter than sugar and is approved as a food additive worldwide.

What is Advantame?

Advantame is a synthetic, non-nutritive sweetener approved in the European Union under the food additive number E969. It belongs to the class of high-intensity sweeteners and is approximately 20,000 to 37,000 times sweeter than table sugar (sucrose), depending on the application. Because of this extreme sweetness potency, it is used in very small quantities. Advantame is chemically related to aspartame but contains an additional chemical modification that makes it safe for individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU), as it releases negligible amounts of phenylalanine in the body.

Production and Chemical Properties

Advantame is produced through a chemical reaction between aspartame and isovanillin. It appears as a white, crystalline powder that is readily soluble in water. A key property of advantame is its heat stability, which makes it suitable for use in cooked and baked food products. This distinguishes it from conventional aspartame, which loses its sweetness when exposed to high temperatures.

Regulatory Approval and Uses

Advantame was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2014 as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) and is also authorized in the European Union as food additive E969. It is used in a wide range of food and beverage products, including:

  • Low-calorie and sugar-free soft drinks
  • Confectionery and chewing gum
  • Baked goods and desserts
  • Dairy products and ice cream
  • Tabletop sweeteners

Safety and Health Assessment

Advantame has been thoroughly evaluated for safety by multiple international regulatory bodies. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have both concluded that advantame is safe for human consumption. The established Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) is 5 mg per kilogram of body weight per day.

Unlike aspartame, advantame does not contribute significantly to phenylalanine intake and therefore does not require a PKU warning label on food packaging. Nevertheless, health authorities recommend moderate consumption as part of a balanced diet.

Benefits and Criticisms

Benefits

  • Calorie-free, making it suitable for calorie-reduced diets
  • Tooth-friendly, as it is not metabolized by oral bacteria
  • Suitable for people with diabetes, as it does not affect blood glucose levels
  • Heat-stable and versatile across many food applications
  • No phenylketonuria risk

Criticisms and Open Questions

  • Long-term human studies are still limited
  • Some consumers have general concerns about synthetic food additives
  • Potential effects on the gut microbiome are still being researched
