People affected find it difficult to perform everyday movements or physical activities. The term is derived from the Greek: a- (without) and dynamis (strength). Adynamia is not a disease in itself, but rather a symptom pointing to an underlying condition.
Causes
Adynamia can be triggered by a wide variety of diseases and conditions. Common causes include:
- Endocrine disorders: e.g., Addison disease (adrenal insufficiency), hypothyroidism, or diabetes mellitus
- Infectious diseases: e.g., severe bacterial or viral infections, sepsis
- Neurological conditions: e.g., myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophies, stroke
- Electrolyte imbalances: particularly low potassium (hypokalemia) or low sodium (hyponatremia)
