What is Agyrax?

Agyrax is a pharmacy-only, plant-derived medicinal product used as a supportive measure in the treatment of overweight. It belongs to the group of bulking agents (also known as dietary fibre preparations) and is intended to be used alongside a calorie-reduced diet. The active ingredient in Agyrax is carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), a semi-synthetic cellulose derivative that swells in the gastrointestinal tract, creating a feeling of fullness.

Indication

Agyrax is used in adults who are overweight and wish to reduce their body weight. It is designed as a short-term supportive measure and does not replace a long-term dietary change or lifestyle modification. It is not suitable for children or adolescents.

Mechanism of Action

The active ingredient carboxymethylcellulose is a water-soluble dietary fibre that absorbs water in the stomach after ingestion and swells considerably. This leads to:

An increased feeling of satiety before and during meals
Slowed gastric emptying, which prolongs the sensation of fullness
A potential reduction in food intake due to reduced hunger

Since carboxymethylcellulose is not absorbed by the body, it acts purely mechanically and has no direct influence on metabolism.

Dosage and Administration

Agyrax is taken in tablet form. The recommended dose is typically 3 tablets three times daily, approximately 30 minutes before main meals. The tablets must be taken with a sufficient amount of water (at least one large glass, approx. 200 ml) to ensure the swelling effect works optimally and to prevent constipation. The duration of use is limited to a few weeks; longer use should only be undertaken after consultation with a doctor.

Side Effects

Agyrax is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects may include:

Flatulence and stomach discomfort, especially at the beginning of use
Constipation if insufficient fluids are consumed
Rarely, allergic reactions to the ingredients of the preparation

If swallowing difficulties, persistent abdominal pain, or other unusual symptoms occur, the intake should be stopped and a doctor consulted.

Contraindications and Warnings

Agyrax should not be taken in cases of:

Known narrowing or obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract
Swallowing disorders (dysphagia)
Known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
Diabetes mellitus, without prior medical consultation, as dietary adjustments may affect blood glucose control

Agyrax is not a substitute for medically supervised weight reduction and should always be used in consultation with a doctor when the Body Mass Index (BMI) exceeds 30.
