Alum (chemical name: potassium aluminium sulfate, KAl(SO₄)₂·12H₂O) is a water-soluble double salt from the sulfate group. It occurs naturally as a mineral and can also be produced synthetically. The most commonly used form is potassium alum, though variants such as ammonium alum and chrome alum also exist. Alum has a pronounced astringent effect on tissues and mucous membranes, which accounts for its versatile use in medicine, cosmetics, and industry.

Alum has been traditionally used to stop bleeding from small cuts, such as those from shaving. Alum blocks (styptic pencils or shaving stones) are applied directly to the wound, stopping bleeding through their hemostatic action.
In natural deodorants and antiperspirants, alum is used as an effective alternative to synthetic aluminium chloride compounds. It reduces sweating and inhibits odor-causing bacteria without permanently clogging pores.
Due to its astringent and antimicrobial properties, alum is used in mouthwashes and for the treatment of mild gum inflammation (gingivitis). It tones gum tissue and can inhibit bacterial growth in the oral cavity.
Alum is applied in cases of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), acne, and oily or blemish-prone skin. Its pore-tightening effect makes it a popular ingredient in facial toners and astringent skincare products.
In the food industry, alum is approved as a food additive E520 (aluminium sulfate). It serves as a firming agent, for example in the production of pickled cucumbers or maraschino cherries to maintain crunchiness. In some countries, it is also used as a leavening agent. Within the European Union, its use in food products is strictly regulated.
