Things worth knowing about "Alzheimer's disease"

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that primarily affects memory and other cognitive abilities.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia and mainly affects older people. Alzheimer's disease leads to a gradual loss of mental abilities, which can manifest itself in problems with memory, understanding and orientation. Although the exact causes are not yet fully understood, researchers believe that a combination of genetic, environmental and age-related factors favour the development of Alzheimer's disease.

The main cause of Alzheimer's disease is the deposition of beta-amyloid plaques and the formation of tau fibrils in the brain. These deposits disrupt communication between the nerve cells and ultimately lead to their death. Risk factors include genetic predispositions, in particular the gene Apf4, which increases the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease. Other risk factors include hypertension, diabetes, a diet high in fat and sugar, obesity, lack of exercise and a lack of mental and social activity.

There is currently no cure for the neurodegenerative disease, but there are various treatment options aimed at alleviating the symptoms and slowing the progression of the disease. The most commonly prescribed drugs include cholinesterase inhibitors (such as donepezil) and glutamate antagonists, which improve communication between nerve cells. In addition to drug therapy, non-drug approaches such as cognitive training, dietary changes and physical activity can also have a supportive effect. Studies show that a balanced diet with a high proportion of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, especially vitamin D and B vitamins, as well as an active lifestyle can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
