What is Andrographis?
Andrographis (botanical name: Andrographis paniculata) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to South and Southeast Asia. It has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic medicine in India and in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Due to its intensely bitter taste, it is commonly referred to as the "King of Bitters." The entire plant, especially its leaves and aerial parts, is used medicinally.
Active Compounds and Mechanism of Action
The primary active compound in Andrographis is andrographolide, a diterpene lactone found in high concentrations in the leaves. Other important constituents include dehydroandrographolide, neoandrographolide, and various flavonoids.
- Immune modulation: Andrographolide stimulates the activity of immune cells such as natural killer (NK) cells and macrophages, and promotes antibody production.
- Anti-inflammatory effects: The active compounds inhibit the NF-κB signaling pathway, a central regulator of inflammatory processes, thereby reducing the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
- Antiviral activity: Laboratory studies have demonstrated antiviral properties against various viruses, including influenza and common cold viruses.
- Antioxidant effects: Andrographis extracts neutralize free radicals, protecting cells from oxidative stress.
Medical Uses
Andrographis is used in phytotherapy and as a dietary supplement for a range of health concerns:
- Common cold and flu: The best-supported application is relief from acute respiratory tract infections. Clinical studies show that standardized extracts can significantly reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms such as sore throat, cough, and fever.
- Immune support: The plant is used to support the immune system in general, especially during the cold season.
- Inflammatory conditions: Early research suggests potential benefits in inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.
- Traditional uses: Traditionally, Andrographis was also used to support liver function, reduce fever, and as a general tonic.
Dosage and Usage Notes
Andrographis is available in capsules, tablets, teas, and liquid extracts. For clinically proven effects on the common cold, standardized extracts with a defined andrographolide content are typically used (commonly 4–6 mg andrographolide per daily dose in extracts providing 10–30 mg andrographolide per capsule). Clinical trials have frequently used daily doses of 200–400 mg dry extract (equivalent to approximately 60 mg andrographolide) over a period of 5–10 days. Individual dosage should be discussed with a physician or pharmacist.
Side Effects and Safety
Andrographis is generally considered well tolerated at recommended doses for short-term use. Possible side effects include:
- Gastrointestinal complaints (e.g., nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain)
- Headache and fatigue
- Allergic reactions (rare)
- At very high doses, hepatotoxic (liver-toxic) effects have been observed in animal studies
Contraindications: Andrographis should not be taken by:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women (possible uterine-stimulating effects)
- Individuals with autoimmune diseases (as the immune system may be further stimulated)
- Persons taking blood-thinning medications (possible interactions)
Scientific Evidence
The efficacy of Andrographis in acute respiratory tract infections is comparatively well studied. Several randomized, controlled trials and meta-analyses confirm a significant reduction in the duration and severity of cold symptoms. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recognized Andrographis extracts for the relief of cold symptoms as a traditional herbal medicinal product. For other areas of application, the scientific evidence remains limited and further research is needed.
