Anusara Yoga is a modern, hatha-based yoga style founded in 1997 by American yoga teacher John Friend. The name comes from Sanskrit and can be translated as “flowing with grace” or “opening to what is good.” Anusara Yoga blends precise anatomical alignment principles with a positive, heart-centered philosophy rooted in Tantric spirituality.
John Friend developed Anusara Yoga drawing from his background in Iyengar Yoga and the philosophy of Tantric Shaivism. He created a system that combines the rigorous alignment work of Iyengar Yoga with a joyful, affirming spiritual outlook. During the early 2000s, Anusara Yoga gained a large international following, particularly in North America and Europe. Following personal controversies involving John Friend in 2012, the community reorganized, and today the style is carried forward by many independent certified teachers worldwide.
The foundation of Anusara Yoga practice lies in five Universal Principles of Alignment that are applied throughout every posture:
Anusara Yoga is grounded in the Tantric philosophical view that all human beings are inherently good, whole, and complete. The practice does not aim to fix a deficiency but rather to celebrate and express the inner beauty and divinity within each person. This positive worldview shapes the entire teaching approach: instructors are encouraged to uplift and inspire students rather than simply correct or critique them.
A typical Anusara Yoga class begins with a thematic introduction (Theme) that sets a spiritual or philosophical intention for the session. This is followed by warm-up exercises, a sequence of asanas (physical postures), and a closing relaxation phase (Savasana). Classes place strong emphasis on:
Regular Anusara Yoga practice may offer a range of physical and mental health benefits, including:
Anusara Yoga is generally suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. Beginners benefit from the clear and structured alignment teaching, while more experienced practitioners are challenged by the philosophical depth and more advanced postures. Individuals with physical limitations or health conditions should consult a healthcare professional before starting and seek a qualified instructor who can offer appropriate modifications.
Compared to other yoga styles, Anusara Yoga stands out through its unique combination of detailed alignment work and heart-centered spirituality. While Iyengar Yoga focuses strongly on technical precision and Vinyasa Yoga emphasizes flowing movement sequences, Anusara Yoga integrates both elements with a Tantric philosophy celebrating the joy of being alive.
