Arthritis can affect one or more joints and can occur in various forms. The most common are rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the joints, and arthrosis, which is caused by wear and tear of the joint cartilage. Infections or metabolic diseases such as gout can also cause arthritis.
Typical symptoms of arthritis include joint pain, redness, overheating, swelling and limited mobility of the affected joints. The joints can be stiff, especially in the morning or after long periods of rest. The disease can be relapsing or chronic and can lead to permanent joint damage if left untreated.
The treatment of arthritis depends on the cause. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or cortisone are often used. In autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, immunosuppressants or biologics are often prescribed. In addition to drug therapy, physiotherapy, exercise and an anti-inflammatory diet can help to alleviate symptoms and maintain joint function. Omega-3 fatty acids, which are contained in fish oil or linseed and have anti-inflammatory properties, play a special role in the diet. Vitamin D and curcumin (turmeric extract) can also have a supportive effect, as they promote immune regulation and inhibit inflammation.
