Things worth knowing about "Avian flu"

Bird flu, also known as avian influenza, is a viral disease that mainly affects birds, but can also be transmitted to humans in certain cases.

The disease is caused by influenza A viruses, in particular the subtypes H5N1, H7N9 and H5N8, which can cause varying degrees of severity depending on the virus strain. While many avian influenza viruses are harmless to wild birds, highly pathogenic strains can lead to severe illness and high mortality rates in poultry. Transmission to humans is rare, but can occur through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated surfaces. Human-to-human transmission is rare to date, but poses a potential risk for future pandemics.

Symptoms of avian influenza infection in humans are similar to those of the common flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, muscle pain and difficulty breathing. In severe cases, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome or multiple organ failure can occur, especially in infections with highly pathogenic strains such as H5N1. The mortality rate for these infections is significantly higher compared to seasonal flu.

Bird flu is usually treated with antiviral drugs such as oseltamivir or zanamivir, which inhibit virus replication and can alleviate the course of the disease if administered early. A specific vaccination for humans is currently not generally available, although vaccines for poultry are available to contain the spread of the virus. In addition to drug therapy, preventive measures are crucial to reduce the risk of infection. These include strict hygiene measures, avoiding contact with sick poultry and careful food hygiene.
