Things worth knowing about "Baby food storage"

Proper baby food storage protects your child from germs and spoilage. Learn how to safely store purees, milk, and ready-made jars for your baby.

What is Baby Food Storage?

Baby food storage refers to all measures taken to ensure that food for infants and toddlers is stored hygienically and in a way that preserves its nutritional value. Since a baby's immune system is not yet fully developed, infants are especially vulnerable to bacteria, germs, and contaminants in food. Correct storage is therefore a key component of baby care and food safety.

General Hygiene Rules

Regardless of the type of baby food, the following basic hygiene rules apply:

  • Wash hands thoroughly before preparing or transferring food.
  • Use clean utensils and sterilized containers.
  • Never leave food at room temperature if it will not be consumed immediately.
  • Do not store or reheat food that has already been warmed up.
  • Always check expiry dates and best-before dates.

Storage by Food Type

Ready-made Jars and Frozen Purees

Unopened jars can be stored at room temperature in a cool, dry, and dark place until the printed best-before date. Once opened, leftovers that were not fed directly from the jar can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. If the baby was fed directly from the jar, any remaining food must be discarded immediately, as saliva promotes bacterial growth.

Home-prepared Purees

Freshly prepared purees should ideally be fed to the baby right away. If prepared in advance, they can be stored in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. In the freezer at -18°C, home-cooked purees can be stored for up to 3 months. It is best to freeze purees in small individual portions to make thawing easier and reduce waste.

Breast Milk

Freshly expressed breast milk can be kept at room temperature (up to 25°C) for approximately 4 hours. In the refrigerator at 4°C, it remains safe for up to 4 days. When frozen at -18°C, it can be stored for up to 6 months. Thawed breast milk must not be refrozen and should be used within 24 hours if stored in the refrigerator after thawing.

Formula Milk (Infant and Follow-on Formula)

Prepared formula should ideally be fed to the baby immediately after preparation. Any unused portions must be discarded after a maximum of 2 hours at room temperature. Prepared (but not yet warmed) formula can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Opened formula powder should be stored in a cool, dry place with the lid tightly closed and used within 4 weeks of opening.

Snacks and Finger Foods for Babies

Fresh fruit pieces, cooked vegetables, or other finger food snacks for older infants should be kept in the refrigerator and consumed within 24 hours. Any food that has been partially chewed or bitten into should be discarded immediately.

Suitable Storage Containers

The following containers are particularly well suited for storing baby food:

  • BPA-free plastic containers with screw-top or snap-lock lids
  • Glass containers with sealing lids (food-grade quality)
  • Specialized breast milk storage bags for freezing breast milk
  • Silicone ice cube trays for freezing purees in individual portions

All containers should be sterilized regularly or washed in a dishwasher at high temperatures.

Common Storage Mistakes

  • Saving leftovers from a jar after direct feeding
  • Re-refrigerating and reusing food that has already been warmed
  • Freezing portions that are too large (makes thawing uneven)
  • Not labeling containers with the date and contents
  • Storing baby food in the refrigerator door (temperatures fluctuate most there)

When Should You Be Cautious?

Baby food should be discarded immediately if it shows any changes in smell, color, or texture. When in doubt, throw it out. Food poisoning from spoiled baby food can cause serious health problems in infants and requires prompt medical attention.
