Bamboo extract is derived from the bamboo plant and is rich in silica. It is used in natural medicine and as a dietary supplement to support skin, hair, nail, and bone health.
Bamboo extract is obtained from various bamboo species, primarily Bambusa vulgaris and Bambusa arundinacea. Bamboo belongs to the grass family (Poaceae) and is native to Asia, Latin America, and Africa. The extract is mainly produced from the bamboo stem and leaves and is considered one of the richest plant-based sources of organic silica (silicon).
The most important active compound in bamboo extract is silicic acid, a compound of the trace element silicon. In addition, bamboo extract contains:
Silicon is a trace element involved in the formation of collagen in the human body. Collagen is a structural protein essential for the firmness of skin, hair, nails, bones, and cartilage. Bamboo extract may help to:
The flavonoids present act as free radical scavengers and can reduce oxidative stress, which is considered a contributing factor to premature aging and various diseases.
Bamboo extract is frequently used in dietary supplements for skin, hair, and nails. Silica is believed to improve skin elasticity, promote hair growth, and strengthen nails. Some studies suggest that regular intake of silicon may positively influence skin moisture and surface texture.
Silicon plays a role in bone formation and remodeling. Bamboo extract is therefore also used to support bone health and joint function, for example as a complementary therapy in cases of osteoporosis or osteoarthritis.
In traditional Asian medicine, bamboo extract has been used as a remedy for centuries, including for the treatment of respiratory conditions, to aid digestion, and as a general tonic.
Bamboo extract is available in capsules, tablets, powder, and liquid extract form. There is no officially established daily dose from authorities such as EFSA or WHO. In practice, products typically offer 300 to 600 mg of bamboo extract per day, with varying silicon content. Intake should follow product instructions or be discussed with a physician or pharmacist.
Bamboo extract is generally considered well tolerated at usual doses. Adverse effects are rare but may include:
Individuals with kidney disease should consult a physician before taking silicon supplements, as silicon is excreted via the kidneys. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also discuss use with a healthcare provider.
The evidence base for the efficacy of bamboo extract in humans is still limited. Initial clinical studies show positive effects on skin and bone parameters with regular silicon intake; however, larger randomized controlled trials are still needed. The EFSA has so far not approved any health claims specifically for bamboo extract.
