Things worth knowing about "bed bug bites"

Bed bug bites are skin injuries caused by the common bed bug (Cimex lectularius). They typically cause itching, redness, and welts, but are generally harmless to overall health.

What Are Bed Bug Bites?

Bed bug bites occur when the common bed bug (Cimex lectularius) feeds on human blood during the night. These small, reddish-brown parasites are nocturnal and typically bite people while they sleep. The bites themselves are painless because bed bugs inject a mild anesthetic through their saliva. Skin reactions usually develop several hours after the bite.

Causes and Transmission

Bed bugs spread primarily through:

  • Infested luggage, clothing, or secondhand furniture
  • Stays in infested hotels, hostels, or apartments
  • Used mattresses or upholstered furniture
  • Neighboring infestations in apartment buildings

During the day, bed bugs hide in mattress seams, bed frame cracks, wallpaper edges, and other hard-to-reach areas.

Symptoms

Typical symptoms of bed bug bites include:

  • Red, itchy welts or raised bumps on the skin
  • Bites often appearing in a line or cluster (commonly called the breakfast-lunch-dinner pattern)
  • Affected areas: arms, legs, neck, face, and shoulders
  • Intense itching beginning hours after the bite
  • In rare cases, allergic reactions with more pronounced swelling or blistering

Bed bug bites do not transmit infectious diseases, but scratching can lead to secondary bacterial skin infections.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is primarily based on:

  • Visual inspection of the skin and evaluation of the typical bite pattern
  • Medical history, including recent travel or hotel stays
  • Inspection of the sleeping area for live bed bugs, shed skins, or dark fecal spots

Because bed bug bites can resemble other insect bites or skin conditions, inspecting the sleeping environment is an important diagnostic step.

Treatment

Local Treatment of Bites

  • Cooling affected skin areas with a cold compress
  • Antihistamine creams or gels to relieve itching
  • Corticosteroid ointments for more severe reactions (under medical supervision)
  • Oral antihistamines for pronounced itching or allergic reactions
  • Antibiotic treatment by a physician in case of secondary infection

Eliminating the Infestation

  • Hire a professional pest control service
  • Wash mattresses, bedding, and clothing at a minimum of 60 degrees Celsius
  • Treat infested items in a dryer at high heat
  • Freeze infested textiles at below -18 degrees Celsius for at least 72 hours
  • Vacuum mattresses, frames, and cracks thoroughly

When to See a Doctor

Medical attention should be sought in the following situations:

  • Severe allergic reactions (difficulty breathing, significant swelling)
  • Signs of secondary infection (pus formation, fever, increasing redness)
  • Persistent psychological distress due to the infestation (sleep disorders, anxiety)

Prevention

  • Carefully inspect luggage after traveling
  • Check mattresses and bed frame seams when staying in hotels
  • Only purchase used furniture or mattresses after thorough inspection
  • Use protective mattress encasements
