What is Betaisodona?

Betaisodona is an antiseptic medicinal product whose active ingredient is povidone-iodine (also known as polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine, or PVP-iodine). It is used for disinfecting wounds, skin, and mucous membranes, and is available in several formulations including solution, ointment, gel, and scrub soap. Betaisodona is a well-established antiseptic widely used in wound care and preoperative skin disinfection.

Mechanism of Action

The active ingredient povidone-iodine slowly releases free iodine, which exerts an antimicrobial effect on microorganisms. The released iodine oxidizes essential cellular structures of pathogens, particularly proteins and nucleic acids, thereby destroying them. The advantage over pure iodine is that povidone-iodine keeps iodine in a bound form and releases it in a controlled manner, which reduces skin irritation and prolongs the duration of action.

Betaisodona is effective against a broad spectrum of pathogens:

Bacteria (gram-positive and gram-negative)
Viruses (including enveloped and non-enveloped viruses)

Formulations and Dosage

Betaisodona is available in several forms:

Solution (10% povidone-iodine): for wound disinfection and skin antisepsis
Ointment (10% povidone-iodine): for wound treatment, supports a moist wound environment
Gel: suitable for sensitive areas
Scrub soap: for hygienic and surgical hand disinfection
Oral antiseptic: as a diluted solution for gargling

Application should follow the manufacturer instructions or medical advice. For wound use, the solution is applied undiluted or diluted. Excessive or long-term application on large wound areas should be avoided.

Side Effects

Betaisodona is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include:

Local skin irritation, redness, or burning at the site of application
Allergic reactions to iodine (rare but possible)
With large-area or prolonged use: systemic absorption of iodine through the skin, potentially affecting thyroid function
