BIA is widely used in medicine, nutritional counseling, sports medicine, and rehabilitation. It is considered one of the most practical methods for evaluating body composition in both clinical and outpatient settings.
During a BIA measurement, a weak, imperceptible alternating electrical current is passed through the body. Different body tissues conduct electricity at different rates:
From the measured resistance and the so-called phase angle – an indicator of cellular health and membrane integrity – the BIA device software calculates the various body compartments. Additional input data such as height, weight, age, and sex are also factored into the calculations.
