What are Biofactors?

Biofactors is a collective term for vital substances that the human body needs to maintain normal physiological functions. These include vitamins, minerals, trace elements, essential fatty acids, and essential amino acids. The term was introduced to provide a unified description of this group of micronutrients and other essential compounds.

Unlike macronutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, biofactors are typically required in small quantities, yet they are indispensable for growth, development, immune function, and numerous metabolic processes.

Categories of Biofactors

Vitamins

Vitamins are organic compounds that the body cannot produce on its own, or can only produce in insufficient amounts. They are divided into fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and water-soluble vitamins (B-group, C). Each vitamin fulfils specific roles, for example as a coenzyme in energy metabolism or as an antioxidant.

Minerals

Minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium are inorganic compounds needed in relatively larger amounts. They play a central role in bone and tooth formation, muscle contraction, and nerve conduction.

Trace Elements

Trace elements such as iron, zinc, selenium, iodine, and copper are required only in very small amounts (microgram to milligram range), yet are indispensable for numerous enzymatic reactions and hormonal functions.

Essential Fatty Acids and Amino Acids

Essential fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, as well as essential amino acids, must be obtained through the diet since the body cannot synthesize them independently. They are crucial for cell membrane integrity, inflammation regulation, and protein synthesis.

Biological Importance

Biofactors frequently act as coenzymes, cofactors, or structural components in biochemical reactions. Without an adequate supply, vital processes such as energy production, DNA synthesis, immune defense, and hormone synthesis cannot function normally. A deficiency in one or more biofactors can lead to characteristic deficiency diseases, such as scurvy from vitamin C deficiency, rickets from vitamin D deficiency, or anemia from iron deficiency.

Supply and Requirements

The requirement for biofactors varies depending on age, sex, health status, pregnancy, and physical activity. Official recommendations are issued by organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and national nutrition societies. A balanced and varied diet generally covers the needs of most individuals.

However, in certain life situations or health conditions, targeted supplementation may be beneficial. This should always be discussed with a physician, as excessive intake of some biofactors can also be harmful.

Clinical Relevance

In medical practice, the adequate supply of biofactors plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of numerous diseases. Deficiencies can be identified through laboratory tests (blood and urine analyses) and treated specifically. Populations at particular risk of deficiency include older adults, pregnant women, vegans, individuals with chronic intestinal diseases, and patients who have undergone bariatric surgery.
