Fäkales Lactoferrin ist dort ein nicht-invasiver Marker, um entzündliche von funktionellen Darmerkrankungen (z. B. Reizdarmsyndrom) zu unterscheiden. Neben der Gastroenterologie wird Lactoferrin auch als potenzieller Biomarker in anderen Bereichen erforscht – etwa bei Frühgeburtsrisiko in der Gynäkologie, als Immunstatus-Marker, oder im Rahmen von Infektionen und neurodegenerativen Erkrankungen, da es Hinweise auf Entzündung, Eisenstoffwechsel und Immunaktivität liefert.
