Things worth knowing about "Bioresonance"

Bioresonance is an alternative medicine method that claims to measure and therapeutically influence electromagnetic oscillations of the body. It is used for diagnosing and treating various health conditions.

What is Bioresonance?

Bioresonance is an alternative medicine method based on the assumption that all living organisms emit and receive electromagnetic oscillations, referred to as bioresonance signals. Specialised devices are said to measure, analyse, and therapeutically influence these oscillations. The most widely known application is bioresonance therapy, which is premised on the idea that diseased tissue produces different oscillation patterns compared to healthy tissue.

The method was developed in the 1970s by German physician Franz Morell and engineer Erich Rasche. The resulting device was originally called the MORA device, derived from the first syllables of the inventors' surnames. Since then, bioresonance has evolved in various directions and is used worldwide by naturopaths, alternative health practitioners, and some medical doctors.

Basic Principle and Mechanism of Action

The theoretical basis of bioresonance rests on the assumption that every cell, organ, and pathogen possesses characteristic electromagnetic oscillation patterns. These patterns are said to be captured by the bioresonance device via electrodes or hand applicators, electronically processed, and then either amplified or returned to the body in their opposite phase, known as the inverted oscillation.

  • Diagnostically: The device is supposed to detect pathological oscillation patterns, thereby providing indications of illnesses, allergies, or toxic burdens.
  • Therapeutically: By returning inverted oscillations to the body, diseased patterns are said to be neutralised and the body's natural balance restored.

From a scientific standpoint, this mechanism of action has not been substantiated. There are no established physical or biological principles that would explain how a device could measure and therapeutically influence the body's own oscillations.

Areas of Application

In practice, bioresonance therapy is offered for a wide range of complaints and conditions, including:

  • Allergies and intolerances (e.g. hay fever, food allergies)
  • Smoking cessation
  • Chronic pain conditions
  • Skin disorders (e.g. atopic dermatitis, psoriasis)
  • Gastrointestinal complaints
  • Stress-related conditions
  • Parasitic infections and other infectious conditions

Treatment is typically administered by attaching electrodes or hand grips through which the device connects to the body. A session usually lasts between 30 and 90 minutes.

Scientific Assessment and Evidence

The scientific community largely views bioresonance with scepticism. Clinical studies clearly demonstrating efficacy beyond placebo are largely lacking. Some investigations, such as those examining bioresonance for smoking cessation or allergy treatment, produced contradictory results or showed methodological weaknesses.

The German Medical Association (Bundesärztekammer) and other professional medical bodies classify bioresonance as a scientifically unrecognised method. The European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) similarly finds insufficient evidence for the therapeutic benefit of bioresonance-based procedures.

Despite the lack of scientific recognition, many users subjectively report positive experiences. In medicine, this is often attributed to the placebo effect, the natural course of the illness, or accompanying lifestyle changes.

Safety and Risks

Bioresonance therapy is generally considered to have few side effects, as the devices used do not exert demonstrably harmful physical effects on the body. Nevertheless, the following risks exist:

  • Delay of necessary treatments: If bioresonance is used as the sole therapy for serious conditions, it may lead to a delay in starting effective conventional medical treatment.
  • Incorrect diagnoses: Bioresonance-based diagnoses are not validated and can result in a misassessment of a person's health status.
  • Financial burden: The costs of bioresonance sessions are generally not covered by statutory health insurance.

Legal and Insurance Classification

In Germany, bioresonance therapy is not a recognised health insurance benefit, meaning costs must typically be paid out of pocket. It is primarily offered by naturopaths and some doctors working in the field of complementary medicine. Bioresonance devices are subject to medical device regulations; however, they are not required to demonstrate clinical efficacy as long as they are approved solely for diagnostic rather than therapeutic purposes.
