Biorhythm analysis is a method that calculates physical, emotional, and intellectual cycles based on a person's birth date to predict daily highs and lows.
Biorhythm analysis is a pseudoscientific method that uses a person's birth date to calculate three alleged biological cycles: a physical cycle, an emotional cycle, and an intellectual cycle. The concept suggests that these cycles follow sinusoidal patterns and influence a person's overall well-being and performance. The theory was developed in the late 19th and early 20th century by physicians Wilhelm Fliess and Hermann Swoboda, along with engineer Friedrich Teltscher.
The classical biorhythm model defines three primary cycles:
Later variations of the biorhythm theory introduced additional cycles, including:
These extensions are even more speculative and lack any scientific foundation.
Biorhythm analysis enjoyed widespread popularity especially during the 1970s and 1980s. It appeared in self-help books, dedicated calculators, and later in computer software and mobile apps. Users calculate their current cycle phases based on their birth date and derive recommendations for physical activity, important decisions, or rest periods.
Today, biorhythm analysis is primarily used in personal wellness contexts and within esoteric communities. Some users report recognizing their personal highs and lows within the predicted cycle phases.
From a scientific standpoint, biorhythm analysis is considered non-evidence-based. Numerous studies have examined the underlying claims and found no statistically significant correlation between the proposed cycles and actual physical, emotional, or cognitive performance. The medical and scientific community therefore classifies this method as pseudoscience.
In contrast, well-established biological rhythms such as the circadian rhythm (the 24-hour sleep-wake cycle), regulated by the hormonal system and light exposure, are scientifically recognized and should not be confused with the popular biorhythm theory described above.
Chronobiology is a legitimate medical science that studies biological rhythms in the human body, such as the sleep-wake cycle, hormonal cycles, and seasonal variations. It is grounded in proven physiological mechanisms and must be clearly distinguished from popular biorhythm analysis. Those interested in how biological timing affects health are better served by consulting research in chronobiology.
