Bone marrow stimulation markers are biological measurements (biomarkers) determined in the blood or bone marrow to assess the activity and regenerative capacity of the bone marrow. The bone marrow is the central organ of hematopoiesis – the process of blood cell formation – and produces billions of red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes) every day. When the bone marrow is stimulated, for example by diseases, medications, or therapeutic interventions, the levels of these markers change in measurable ways.
These markers are primarily used in hematology, oncology, and transplantation medicine to monitor the success of treatments and evaluate bone marrow function.
Reticulocytes are immature red blood cells released directly from the bone marrow into the bloodstream. An increase in reticulocyte count indicates active erythrocyte production by the bone marrow. The Reticulocyte Production Index (RPI) is a derived value that assesses the actual productive output of the bone marrow.
Erythropoietin is a hormone produced mainly by the kidneys that stimulates the production of red blood cells in the bone marrow.
