Brachycephalus (also spelled Brachicephalus) describes an anatomical characteristic in which the skull is shortened along its length and widened across its breadth. The term derives from the Greek words brachys (short) and kephalé (head). The cephalic index -- the ratio of skull width to skull length -- exceeds 80 in brachycephalic individuals. The face appears flat, with a noticeably recessed nose and muzzle region.
In both human and veterinary medicine, the term is used for people as well as animals. The brachycephalic airway syndrome in certain dog and cat breeds is particularly well known and can be associated with serious respiratory problems.
