Things worth knowing about "Bulimia"

Bulimia is an eating disorder characterised by repeated episodes of overeating (binge eating) followed by unhealthy weight control measures such as vomiting, excessive exercise or the use of laxatives.

People who suffer from bulimia often have lost control of their eating behaviour and are overly concerned about their body weight and appearance. Common symptoms include binge eating, where large amounts of food are consumed in a short period of time, and attempts to control weight through vomiting or other unhealthy methods. Sufferers often feel guilty or ashamed and hide their behaviour.

The causes of bulimia are complex and include genetic, psychological and social factors. A negative body image, the desire for control and emotional stress all play a role. Social ideals of beauty and the pressure to conform to a certain body image also increase the risk of the disease.

Treatment often consists of a combination of psychotherapeutic methods, in particular cognitive behavioural therapy, and medical support. The aim is to normalise the disordered eating behaviour, develop a healthy body image and work on the underlying psychological problems. In some cases, medication is also used, particularly to treat accompanying illnesses such as depression.

Untreated, bulimia can lead to serious health problems such as electrolyte imbalances, dehydration, dental damage due to frequent vomiting and damage to the digestive organs. Psychological consequences such as depression, anxiety and impaired self-esteem are also common. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent long-term damage to health and to help sufferers develop a healthy relationship with food and body image.
