What Are Burnout Symptoms?

Burnout is a state of deep physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged and overwhelming stress – most commonly in a professional setting, but also triggered by personal pressures. Symptoms typically develop gradually and are often recognized only at a late stage.

Core Symptoms of Burnout

The symptoms are grouped into three core dimensions, as described by the World Health Organization (WHO) in ICD-11:

1. Emotional and Physical Exhaustion

  • Persistent, deep fatigue that does not improve with sleep
  • Lack of energy and chronic weakness
  • Sleep disturbances (difficulty falling or staying asleep)
  • Physical complaints such as headaches, back pain, and digestive issues
  • Weakened immune system and frequent illness

2. Emotional Detachment and Cynicism

  • Feelings of inner emptiness and indifference toward work or daily life
  • Cynical or negative attitudes toward colleagues or professional tasks
  • Social withdrawal and isolation
  • Loss of empathy and compassion
  • Irritability and increased emotional sensitivity

3. Reduced Professional Efficacy

  • Difficulty concentrating and memory problems
  • Feelings of ineffectiveness and failure
  • Loss of motivation and enthusiasm
  • Procrastination and difficulty making decisions

Diagnosis and Differentiation

Burnout is classified in ICD-11 as a syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress (Code QD85), but it is not a standalone psychiatric disorder. Diagnosis is made through an in-depth clinical interview, standardized questionnaires (e.g., the Maslach Burnout Inventory), and the exclusion of other conditions such as depression, thyroid disorders, or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

Treatment

Treatment depends on the severity and may include:

  • Psychotherapy: Cognitive behavioral therapy to address thought patterns and develop stress coping strategies
  • Stress management: Learning relaxation techniques such as Progressive Muscle Relaxation, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), or yoga
  • Lifestyle adjustments: Regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, and sufficient sleep
  • Occupational changes: Reduction of working hours, redistribution of tasks, or career change
  • Medication: May be considered for significant co-symptoms (e.g., depression) under medical supervision
