What is Calcium Stearate?
Calcium stearate is a calcium salt of stearic acid, a saturated fatty acid with 18 carbon atoms. It appears as a white, waxy powder that is insoluble in water but soluble in hot organic solvents. While it occurs naturally in some plant and animal fats, it is predominantly produced industrially through the reaction of calcium hydroxide with stearic acid.
Applications
Food Industry
In the European Union, calcium stearate is approved as a food additive under the designation E 470b. It functions as an emulsifier, anti-caking agent, and stabilizer. Common uses include:
- Preventing powders, granules, and tablets from clumping together
- Acting as a lubricant in the manufacturing of confectionery and baked goods
- Stabilizing food surfaces, for example in chewing gum and coatings
- Non-stick agent in food processing equipment
Pharmaceutical Industry
Calcium stearate is widely used in pharmaceuticals as a tablet lubricant and processing aid. It improves the flow of powder blends in tablet presses and prevents granules from sticking to machine components. Typical concentrations in tablet formulations range from 0.5 to 2 percent.

Beyond food and pharmaceuticals, calcium stearate is used in a variety of other industries:

Safety and Tolerability
Calcium stearate is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) and has been approved for use in food and pharmaceutical applications by both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The quantities used in food products and dietary supplements are minimal and considered safe for consumption.
Calcium stearate is not biologically toxic. Stearic acid, its primary component, is a naturally occurring fatty acid that the human body can readily metabolize. Allergic reactions to calcium stearate are very rare but may occur in individuals with a sensitivity to stearic acid or calcium compounds.
Interactions and Special Notes
When used as intended in food products and pharmaceuticals, no significant interactions with other nutrients or medications have been identified. In industrial settings, where higher concentrations may be encountered, contact with the eyes and respiratory tract should be avoided. Appropriate protective measures should be taken during prolonged occupational exposure.
