What is Carbomer?

Carbomer (commercially known as Carbopol) is a high-molecular-weight synthetic polymer derived from acrylic acid. It is primarily used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries as a gelling agent, thickener, and stabilizer. Carbomers appear as white, slightly hygroscopic powders that form a gel-like consistency when dispersed in water and neutralized.

Chemical Properties

Carbomers consist of cross-linked polyacrylic acid chains. Depending on the degree of cross-linking and molecular weight, various grades are distinguished, including Carbomer 940, Carbomer 980, and Carbomer 934. The viscosity of the resulting gel can be precisely controlled by adjusting the pH, polymer concentration, and degree of neutralization. The optimal pH range for gel formation is between 6 and 9.

Pharmaceutical Applications

In pharmaceutics, carbomer is used in a wide range of dosage forms:

Eye drops and artificial tears: Carbomer-based eye drops form a viscous film on the ocular surface and are used to treat dry eye syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca).
Topical gels: Carbomer serves as the base for skin gels containing active ingredients such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, or antivirals.
Vaginal gels and rectal formulations: Due to its bioadhesive properties, carbomer adheres well to mucous membranes, enabling prolonged drug release.
Oral formulations: In tablets and capsules, carbomer is used as a matrix-forming agent for extended-release (retard) formulations that ensure controlled drug delivery.

Cosmetic Applications

In the cosmetics industry, carbomer is one of the most widely used rheology modifiers. It is found in products such as:

Skin creams and lotions
Hair gels and styling products
Sunscreens
Hand gels and disinfectants (e.g., alcohol-based hand sanitizers)

Carbomer provides a pleasant texture, improves spreadability, and stabilizes emulsions.

Safety and Tolerability

Carbomer is generally considered safe and well-tolerated. It is not significantly absorbed through the skin and has no systemic effect. In rare cases, local skin irritation or allergic reactions may occur. When used in the eye, a brief, transient burning sensation or temporary blurred vision may occur, which typically resolves quickly.

Carbomer is classified by the U.S. FDA as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) and is monographed in several major pharmacopoeias, including the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) and the United States Pharmacopeia (USP).

Bioadhesivity: Carbomer adheres to biological membranes and mucous membranes, enabling prolonged contact time and improved drug absorption.
Transparency: Carbomer gels are optically clear, making them particularly attractive for cosmetic and ophthalmic applications.
