Things worth knowing about "Cardiovascular Heart Disease"

Cardiovascular heart disease affects the blood vessels of the heart and can lead to heart attack or heart failure. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for a good outcome.

What Is Cardiovascular Heart Disease?

Cardiovascular heart disease – also known as coronary artery disease (CAD) or coronary heart disease (CHD) – refers to conditions that affect the blood vessels supplying the heart muscle. The most common underlying cause is atherosclerosis, a process in which fatty deposits, calcium, and fibrous tissue accumulate on the inner walls of the coronary arteries, progressively narrowing them and reducing blood flow to the heart.

Cardiovascular heart disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. However, with early detection, lifestyle changes, and appropriate medical treatment, the risk of serious complications can be significantly reduced.

Causes

The development of cardiovascular heart disease is typically caused by a combination of risk factors:

  • Atherosclerosis: Buildup of plaques inside the coronary artery walls, narrowing blood flow
  • High blood pressure (hypertension): Chronically elevated pressure damages vessel walls
  • High blood cholesterol (hyperlipidemia): Elevated LDL cholesterol promotes plaque formation
  • Diabetes mellitus: High blood sugar damages the walls of blood vessels over time
  • Smoking: Promotes inflammation and accelerates atherosclerosis
  • Obesity and physical inactivity: Place additional strain on the cardiovascular system
  • Family history: A genetic predisposition increases the risk
  • Chronic stress: Contributes to high blood pressure and unhealthy lifestyle habits

Symptoms

Symptoms of cardiovascular heart disease can vary widely depending on the severity and stage of the condition. Common signs include:

  • Angina pectoris: Chest tightness, pressure, or pain, sometimes radiating to the left arm, jaw, or back
  • Shortness of breath: Especially during physical exertion
  • Fatigue and exhaustion: Due to reduced cardiac output
  • Palpitations or irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Heart attack (myocardial infarction): A serious complication involving sudden severe chest pain, sweating, and difficulty breathing

Important: Cardiovascular heart disease can remain symptom-free for many years (known as silent ischemia). Regular medical check-ups are therefore essential for early detection.

Diagnosis

Several diagnostic tools are available to detect and assess cardiovascular heart disease:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG): Records the electrical activity of the heart at rest and under stress
  • Echocardiography (heart ultrasound): Visualizes the structure and function of the heart
  • Blood tests: Measure cholesterol, blood sugar, inflammatory markers, and cardiac proteins (e.g., troponin)
  • Coronary angiography (cardiac catheterization): Direct visualization of the coronary arteries using contrast dye
  • CT coronary angiography: Non-invasive imaging of the coronary vessels
  • Stress test (exercise ECG): Identifies reduced blood flow under physical exertion

Treatment

Treatment depends on the severity and underlying causes of the disease and usually involves a combination of approaches:

Lifestyle Modifications

  • Heart-healthy diet (e.g., Mediterranean diet, low in saturated fats)
  • Regular physical activity (e.g., aerobic exercise)
  • Smoking cessation
  • Stress management and adequate sleep
  • Weight loss if overweight

Medication

  • Statins: Lower LDL cholesterol levels
  • Antihypertensives: Blood pressure-lowering medications (e.g., ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers)
  • Antiplatelet agents: Blood thinners (e.g., aspirin, clopidogrel) to prevent clot formation
  • Nitrates: Dilate the coronary arteries to relieve angina symptoms

Interventional and Surgical Procedures

  • Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI): Balloon angioplasty and stent placement to widen narrowed arteries
  • Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG): Surgical rerouting of blood flow around blocked coronary arteries using a graft vessel

Prevention

Many cases of cardiovascular heart disease can be prevented or delayed through targeted measures. These include maintaining a healthy lifestyle, regularly monitoring blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, and treating risk factors consistently. Routine medical screenings also play a vital role in early prevention.

CDL (Chlorine Dioxide Solution) is an aqueous solution of chlorine dioxide used as a disinfectant. Its use as an internal remedy is medically unrecognized and dangerous.

Calorie deficit

A calorie deficit occurs when the body takes in fewer calories than it burns. It is the fundamental principle behind weight loss and is widely used in dietary management.
