Cartilage is a specialized connective tissue that covers joint surfaces, protects bones, and acts as a shock absorber. Because cartilage tissue lacks blood vessels, its ability to self-regenerate is severely limited, making damage to this tissue particularly significant from a medical perspective.

The harvested cartilage cells (chondrocytes) are multiplied in the laboratory and then implanted into the damaged area of the joint in a second surgical procedure. This technique is primarily used in younger patients with well-defined cartilage defects and has established itself as an effective option for restoring joint function.
