Carotenoids are a group of natural pigments found in many plants, algae and some bacteria.
Carotenoids are responsible for the yellow, orange and red colours of many fruits and vegetables and play an important role in photosynthesis and as antioxidants.They are divided into two main categories: carotenes, such as beta-carotene, and xanthines, such as lutein and zeaxanthin.Beta-carotene is converted into vitamin A in the body and is important for maintaining healthy vision and immune function. Lutein and zeaxanthin are particularly important for eye health and may help to reduce the risk of age-related eye diseases.
One outstanding carotenoid is astaxanthin, which is known for its powerful antioxidant properties. It occurs naturally in algae, crustaceans and fish and offers numerous health benefits. Astaxanthin helps to reduce oxidative damage in cells, slows down the ageing process and can reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
Carotenoids, including astaxanthin, can be obtained from the diet, especially by eating colourful fruits and vegetables such as carrots, peppers, spinach, kale, tomatoes and berries. A balanced diet rich in carotenoids can contribute to overall health and well-being. As carotenoids are fat-soluble, it is recommended to consume them with a high-fat meal to improve absorption.
