The name derives from the Greek word chalkos, referring to mineral raw materials. This mixture is applied topically and is well known in the treatment of various skin complaints.

The classic formulation of the chalk-sulfur mixture includes:

Sulfur (Sulfur praecipitatum): The primary active ingredient with antimicrobial, keratolytic (skin-softening), and antiparasitic properties.
Calcium carbonate (precipitated chalk): Acts as a carrier substance and has a mildly astringent effect on the skin.
