What is Chalk-Sulfur Mixture?
The chalk-sulfur mixture (German: Chalkogemisch) is a classic preparation from naturopathic and traditional medicine, primarily composed of precipitated sulfur (Sulfur praecipitatum) and calcium carbonate (chalk). The name derives from the Greek word chalkos, referring to mineral raw materials. This mixture is applied topically and is well known in the treatment of various skin complaints.
Composition and Active Ingredients
The classic formulation of the chalk-sulfur mixture includes:
- Sulfur (Sulfur praecipitatum): The primary active ingredient with antimicrobial, keratolytic (skin-softening), and antiparasitic properties.
- Calcium carbonate (precipitated chalk): Acts as a carrier substance and has a mildly astringent effect on the skin.
- Depending on the specific formulation, additional excipients such as talc or zinc oxide may be included.
Mechanism of Action
Sulfur acts on the skin through several mechanisms:
- Keratolytic: Sulfur promotes the shedding of keratinized skin layers and supports skin renewal.
- Antimicrobial: It inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi on the skin surface.
- Antiparasitic: Sulfur compounds are effective against mites and other skin parasites.
- Antiseborrheic: Sulfur helps regulate sebum production, making it suitable for oily, acne-prone skin.
Indications and Uses
The chalk-sulfur mixture is traditionally used for the following skin conditions:
- Acne vulgaris: Its keratolytic and antibacterial properties help cleanse pores and reduce pimples.
- Seborrheic dermatitis: Dandruff and excessive sebum production can be alleviated with this mixture.
- Scabies: Historically, sulfur has been used as an agent against the causative mites (Sarcoptes scabiei).
- Rosacea: Mild forms of rosacea may benefit from the anti-inflammatory properties of sulfur as a supportive treatment.
- Psoriasis: Used as a complementary measure to reduce scaling.
Application and Dosage
The chalk-sulfur mixture is applied exclusively to the skin. It is spread thinly onto affected areas, generally once or twice daily. The duration of application and frequency should be discussed with a physician or pharmacist depending on the skin condition. Excessive use may cause skin dryness or irritation.
Side Effects and Safety
When used as directed, the chalk-sulfur mixture is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include:
- Skin dryness and flaking with prolonged use

- Staining of clothing and textiles due to sulfur components
