Childbirth preparation includes all measures that help expectant parents get ready for birth and life with a newborn, from classes and breathing techniques to mental wellness.
Childbirth preparation refers to all activities, courses, and measures designed to support pregnant women and their partners in getting ready for labor, delivery, and life with a newborn. The goal is to build knowledge, body awareness, and emotional resilience so that the birth experience is as calm and safe as possible.
A typical childbirth preparation course is usually led by a certified midwife and covers a wide range of topics:
The most common format is an in-person course led by a qualified midwife. These classes typically begin around weeks 28 to 32 of pregnancy and consist of multiple sessions spread over several weeks.
Modern online courses allow expectant parents to learn at their own pace from home. They cover similar content to in-person classes and are especially convenient for couples with limited mobility or demanding work schedules.
In addition to standard offerings, there are specialized programs such as prenatal yoga, HypnoBirthing (a self-hypnosis technique for pain reduction), acupuncture for birth preparation, and aquanatal classes.
Experts recommend starting a preparation course no later than weeks 28 to 32 of pregnancy to allow sufficient time to internalize all content. However, some measures – such as healthy nutrition, pelvic floor training, and mental preparation – can begin much earlier in pregnancy.
In many countries, statutory health insurance plans cover the cost of one childbirth preparation course per pregnancy for the expectant mother. Partners may need to pay a contribution. It is advisable to check with your health insurer in advance for specific coverage details.
Research indicates that well-prepared expectant mothers tend to approach labor with greater confidence, experience less anxiety, and are less likely to require strong pain medication. Bonding between parents and child and breastfeeding outcomes can also be positively influenced. Actively involving the birth partner promotes a shared birth experience and better support during and after delivery.
