Things worth knowing about "Choline Bitartrate"

Choline bitartrate is a highly bioavailable form of choline used as a dietary supplement. It supports liver function, fat metabolism, and brain health.

What is Choline Bitartrate?

Choline bitartrate is a salt form of the essential nutrient choline, in which choline is bound to tartaric acid (bitartrate). This compound is water-soluble and offers good bioavailability, making it a popular ingredient in dietary supplements. Choline is considered an essential nutrient because the human body can only produce it in limited quantities and must therefore obtain it through food or supplementation.

Biological Functions

Choline plays several vital roles in the human body:

  • Neurotransmitter synthesis: Choline is a precursor to acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter critical for memory, learning, and muscle control.
  • Cell membrane structure: It is a key component of phosphatidylcholine, an essential building block of all cell membranes.
  • Fat metabolism and liver function: Choline is required for the transport of fats out of the liver, preventing fat accumulation (hepatic steatosis).
  • Methylation processes: Choline donates methyl groups for essential biochemical reactions, including DNA methylation.
  • Brain development: During pregnancy and early childhood, choline is essential for normal brain and nervous system development.

Medical Use and Indications

Choline bitartrate is used in the following areas:

  • Cognitive support: To promote memory and concentration, especially in older adults or during periods of mental fatigue.
  • Liver health: To support liver function and help prevent non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
  • Sports nutrition: As part of pre-workout formulas, since choline supports neuromuscular transmission.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: To meet the increased choline demand needed for fetal brain development.
  • General supplementation: When dietary choline intake is insufficient.

Mechanism of Action

After oral ingestion, choline bitartrate is split in the intestine into free choline and bitartrate. The free choline is absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to various tissues, particularly the brain and liver. In the brain, choline serves as a direct precursor for the synthesis of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in learning and memory processes. In the liver, choline is required for the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, which is essential for exporting fat from the liver.

Recommended Intake

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommends the following adequate intake levels for choline:

  • Adult men and women: 400 mg per day
  • Pregnant women: 480 mg per day
  • Breastfeeding women: 520 mg per day

Dietary supplements commonly provide choline bitartrate in doses of 250 to 500 mg per day. Since choline bitartrate contains approximately 40% pure choline, 500 mg of choline bitartrate provides roughly 200 mg of elemental choline.

Dietary Sources

Choline is naturally found in the following foods:

  • Eggs (especially egg yolks)
  • Liver and other organ meats
  • Meat and poultry
  • Fish and seafood
  • Legumes (e.g., soybeans, peanuts)
  • Cruciferous vegetables (e.g., broccoli, Brussels sprouts)

Deficiency Symptoms

Choline deficiency is uncommon but can occur in certain risk groups, including pregnant women, vegans, or individuals with genetic variants that increase choline requirements. Possible symptoms of deficiency include:

  • Fatty liver and liver damage
  • Muscle weakness
  • Memory and concentration problems
  • Elevated homocysteine levels in the blood

Side Effects and Safety

Choline bitartrate is considered safe when used as directed. However, at very high doses (above 3.5 g of choline per day), side effects may occur:

  • Fishy body odor (due to conversion of choline to trimethylamine in the gut)
  • Nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Excessive sweating and salivation
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension)

The EFSA has established a Tolerable Upper Intake Level of 3.5 g of choline per day for adults.

Interactions

Choline bitartrate may interact in the following situations:

  • Anticholinergic medications: Choline may reduce the effectiveness of drugs that block acetylcholine receptors (e.g., certain antihistamines or bladder medications).
  • Methotrexate: This medication may increase choline requirements.
  • Individuals taking prescription medications should consult a healthcare provider before supplementing with choline bitartrate.

Calorie deficit

A calorie deficit occurs when the body takes in fewer calories than it burns. It is the fundamental principle behind weight loss and is widely used in dietary management.

Fats

Fats are essential macronutrients that provide the body with energy, support cell membrane structure, and enable the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

Macronutrients are the three main nutrients -- carbohydrates, proteins, and fats -- that provide the body with energy and support vital physiological functions.
