A complete blood count (CBC) is one of the most commonly ordered laboratory tests in medicine. It provides a detailed overview of the cells circulating in the blood and includes a differential blood count, which breaks down the different types of white blood cells (leukocytes) into their individual subtypes. In addition to measuring red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells, and platelets (thrombocytes), the CBC offers insight into important indices that describe cell size and hemoglobin content.

Components of a Complete Blood Count

Standard Blood Count Parameters

Hemoglobin (Hb): The protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body.

When is a Complete Blood Count Ordered?

How is the Test Performed?

If abnormal cells are detected, a trained laboratory specialist may perform a manual microscopic examination of a blood smear for further evaluation.

Elevated white blood cells (leukocytosis) with neutrophilia: Often indicates a bacterial infection or inflammation.
Elevated lymphocytes (lymphocytosis): Typical of viral infections such as infectious mononucleosis.
Elevated eosinophils (eosinophilia): Associated with allergies, asthma, or parasitic infections.
Low white blood cells (leukopenia): May indicate bone marrow disorders, viral illness, or medication side effects.
