Covalent compounds are formed when atoms share electrons. Most biologically relevant molecules -- including glucose, amino acids, and vitamins -- are covalent compounds.

Coordination Compounds

Coordination compounds are particularly relevant in biochemistry. A prime example is haemoglobin, where an iron atom forms a complex with an organic ring structure (haem), enabling the transport of oxygen in the blood.

Compounds in Nutrition and Supplementation

In nutritional science, the specific chemical form of a compound significantly influences its bioavailability and effectiveness:

  • Vitamin C exists as ascorbic acid -- an organic compound with antioxidant properties.
  • Iron is commonly supplemented as iron sulfate or iron fumarate, as these compounds offer good absorption in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Calcium is found in foods and supplements in the form of calcium carbonate or calcium citrate, each with different absorption characteristics.

Clinical Relevance

Understanding chemical compounds is essential for physicians, pharmacists, and nutritionists. The efficacy, tolerability, and safety of medicines and dietary supplements depend significantly on the specific compound form in which an active ingredient is present. For example, the chemical form of a mineral can greatly influence its absorption in the intestine and its overall therapeutic effect.
