Things worth knowing about "Contact sleep"

Contact sleep refers to the practice of a caregiver sleeping in close physical contact with an infant or toddler. It supports bonding, breastfeeding, and the child's overall well-being.

What is Contact Sleep?

Contact sleep describes a sleep practice in which an infant or toddler sleeps in close physical contact with a caregiver – most commonly a parent. This can take place in a shared bed (co-sleeping), on the caregiver's body (for example on the chest), or in close proximity using a bedside cot or baby carrier. Contact sleep is a globally widespread and culturally rooted practice, considered a natural part of early childhood care in many societies.

Benefits of Contact Sleep

A growing body of research suggests that contact sleep can have a range of positive effects on both child and caregiver:

  • Strengthening parent-child bonding: Physical closeness and skin-to-skin contact promote emotional attachment between parent and child.
  • Supporting breastfeeding: Contact sleep makes night-time breastfeeding easier and may extend the duration of breastfeeding overall.
  • Soothing the infant: The presence of a familiar person reduces the child's stress levels and helps regulate heart rate, breathing, and body temperature.
  • Better sleep for both: Many parents and children sleep more calmly and for longer periods during contact sleep.
  • Support for premature infants: The kangaroo care method (skin-to-skin contact for premature babies) is medically recognized and has been shown to improve developmental outcomes and physiological stability.

Safety Considerations

Contact sleep – especially with newborns and young infants – carries potential risks that must be carefully considered. Medical bodies such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) highlight the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), which can be increased by unsafe sleep environments.

Key Safety Guidelines for Contact Sleep

  • Do not practice contact sleep if the caregiver has consumed alcohol, drugs, or sedating medications.
  • Avoid soft, loose bedding materials (e.g., large pillows, thick duvets) near the infant.
  • Never fall asleep with the infant on a sofa or armchair – this is considered particularly dangerous.
  • A smoke-free environment is a fundamental requirement for safe contact sleep.
  • The infant should always be placed on their back (supine position) as the safest sleeping position.
  • Premature, ill, or very small infants should only participate in contact sleep under medical supervision.

Contact Sleep and Child Development

From a developmental psychology perspective, contact sleep supports the development of basic trust in infants. The consistent presence of a familiar caregiver provides a sense of safety and security. Studies indicate that children who experience regular physical closeness often develop secure attachment patterns. The hormonal system also benefits: close skin-to-skin contact stimulates the release of oxytocin – often called the bonding hormone – in both child and caregiver.

Contact Sleep vs. Co-Sleeping

The terms contact sleep and co-sleeping are often used interchangeably, but they do not mean exactly the same thing. While co-sleeping broadly refers to sleeping in the same room or bed, contact sleep specifically emphasizes direct physical contact as the defining element. Contact sleep can therefore also occur on a play mat, in a bedside crib placed directly adjacent to the parental bed, or while the child is carried in a baby carrier during rest.

When is Contact Sleep Not Recommended?

There are situations in which contact sleep is generally advised against:

  • When the caregiver is severely fatigued or exhausted
  • When sleep-inducing medications are being taken
  • In households with smokers
  • With very premature or very low-weight infants without medical supervision
