Things worth knowing about "Corona Symptoms"

Corona symptoms are signs of infection with SARS-CoV-2. They range from mild cold-like complaints to severe respiratory problems requiring medical attention.

What Are Corona Symptoms?

Corona symptoms refer to the clinical signs associated with an infection caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2). The disease caused by this virus is known as COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019). The course of illness varies widely: some individuals experience only mild symptoms or none at all, while others develop a severe or life-threatening condition.

Common Symptoms

COVID-19 can present with a broad range of symptoms. The most commonly reported include:

  • Fever or elevated body temperature
  • Dry cough
  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or congested nose
  • Headaches
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Loss of smell and taste (anosmia and ageusia)
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea

Severe Symptoms

In severe cases, the following symptoms may develop and require immediate medical attention:

  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Persistent chest pain or pressure
  • Confusion or altered consciousness
  • Bluish discoloration of the lips or face (cyanosis)
  • Persistently high fever above 39 °C (102.2 °F)

Onset and Duration of Symptoms

The incubation period — the time between exposure and the onset of symptoms — is typically 2 to 14 days, with an average of 5 to 6 days. Mild to moderate illness usually lasts 1 to 2 weeks, while severe cases can persist significantly longer.

Special Clinical Presentations

Asymptomatic Course

A significant proportion of infected individuals show no symptoms (asymptomatic course) but can still transmit the virus to others. This makes containment of the disease particularly challenging.

Long COVID

Some individuals continue to experience symptoms weeks or even months after the acute infection. This is known as Long COVID or Post-COVID Syndrome. Common long-term complaints include persistent fatigue, difficulty concentrating (often called brain fog), shortness of breath, and muscle or joint pain.

Risk Groups

Certain groups of people are at higher risk of developing a severe course of illness:

  • Older adults (aged 60 and above)
  • People with underlying conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, lung disease, or a weakened immune system
  • People with obesity
  • Pregnant individuals

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of a COVID-19 infection is primarily established through:

  • PCR test (polymerase chain reaction): The gold standard for diagnosis, reliably detecting the genetic material of the virus
  • Rapid antigen test: Delivers results quickly, though it is less sensitive than the PCR test
  • Antibody test: Detects a previous infection by identifying immune response markers in the blood

When to Seek Medical Help

For mild symptoms, home isolation and rest are generally recommended. Medical attention should be sought immediately in cases of:

  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Persistently high fever
  • Significant deterioration of general health
  • Signs of a severe course of illness (as listed above)

Treatment

Mild cases are managed with symptomatic treatment, including fever-reducing medications, adequate fluid intake, and rest. Severe cases may require specific antiviral medications (e.g., Nirmatrelvir/Ritonavir) and supportive hospital care. Vaccination remains one of the most effective measures to prevent severe illness and complications.
