Things worth knowing about "Coronavirus"

Coronaviruses are a family of RNA viruses that cause respiratory illnesses ranging from the common cold to severe diseases such as COVID-19.

What is a Coronavirus?

Coronaviruses (family Coronaviridae) are enveloped RNA viruses that infect both humans and animals. Their name comes from their characteristic crown-like appearance under the electron microscope, formed by spike proteins protruding from the viral surface. To date, seven coronaviruses are known to infect humans.

Types of Coronaviruses

Human coronaviruses can be grouped into two main categories:

  • Mild illness: HCoV-229E, HCoV-NL63, HCoV-OC43, and HCoV-HKU1 typically cause common cold symptoms.
  • Severe illness: SARS-CoV (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, 2002/2003), MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, since 2012), and SARS-CoV-2 (responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic from 2019) can cause life-threatening disease.

Causes and Transmission

Coronaviruses spread primarily through respiratory droplets and aerosols released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. Transmission via contaminated surfaces is also possible. Many coronaviruses originate in animal reservoirs such as bats or camels and can jump to humans through a process known as zoonotic transmission.

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending on the specific virus strain and the individual immune response:

  • Cough, sore throat, and runny nose (mild strains)
  • Fever, chills, and pronounced fatigue
  • Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing (severe cases)
  • Loss of smell and taste (characteristic of COVID-19)
  • Gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea and diarrhea
  • In severe cases: pneumonia, organ failure, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)

Diagnosis

Coronavirus infection is diagnosed using several methods:

  • PCR test (Polymerase Chain Reaction): The gold standard for detecting virus-specific genetic material from nasal or throat swabs.
  • Rapid antigen test: Detects viral proteins directly and delivers results within minutes.
  • Antibody test (serology): Indicates a past infection or immune response following vaccination.
  • Imaging: Chest X-ray or CT scan in severe cases to assess pneumonia.

Treatment

Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the illness:

  • Symptomatic therapy: Rest, adequate fluid intake, and fever-reducing medications (e.g., paracetamol or ibuprofen) for mild cases.
  • Antiviral medications: Agents approved for COVID-19 such as nirmatrelvir/ritonavir (Paxlovid) or remdesivir for high-risk patients.
  • Intensive care: Supplemental oxygen, mechanical ventilation, and supportive measures in severe cases.
  • Vaccination: Approved COVID-19 vaccines (mRNA and vector-based) effectively protect against severe disease and reduce the risk of transmission.

Prevention

Health authorities recommend the following preventive measures against coronavirus infections:

  • Regular and thorough handwashing
  • Wearing respiratory masks in high-risk settings
  • Ventilating indoor spaces to reduce aerosol concentration
  • Maintaining physical distancing during periods of high transmission
  • Vaccination in line with current public health recommendations
