Things worth knowing about "CRP Level"

The CRP level measures the concentration of C-reactive protein in the blood.

The C-reactive protein is produced by the liver and rises quickly when inflammation or tissue damage occurs in the body. CRP testing is commonly used to distinguish between bacterial and viral infections or to monitor disease progression.

A normal CRP level is typically below 5 mg/L. Significantly elevated values can indicate acute infectionsautoimmune disorderschronic inflammation, or tissue trauma. High values are often linked to bacterial infections, while viral infections usually cause a moderate increase.

In addition to acute causes, a slightly elevated CRP level may be a sign of low-grade inflammation, which is associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or obesity. The high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) test is therefore also used in cardiovascular risk assessment.

Key Facts about CRP Levels

  • Measures C-reactive protein as a marker of inflammation
  • Normal range usually < 5 mg/L
  • Elevated in infectionsautoimmune diseasestissue damage
  • hs-CRP helps assess cardiovascular risk
  • Rises within 6–8 hours after onset of inflammation
