What Are Cytokines?

Mechanism of Cytokine Stimulation

This binding triggers intracellular signaling cascades – such as the JAK-STAT pathway, the NF-kappaB pathway, or the MAPK pathway. As a result, genes governing inflammation, cell proliferation, differentiation, or programmed cell death (apoptosis) are switched on or off.

Autocrine and Paracrine Signaling

Cytokines can act on the cell that produced them (autocrine stimulation), on neighboring cells (paracrine stimulation), or, in some cases, they enter the bloodstream and exert systemic effects (endocrine action), potentially causing systemic signs of inflammation such as fever.

Cytokine stimulation plays a critical role in numerous physiological and pathological processes:
