Importance of Differential Diagnosis
Many symptoms in medicine are non-specific and can be caused by a wide variety of conditions. For example, chest pain may result from a heart attack, pulmonary embolism, pleuritis, or musculoskeletal causes. The differential diagnosis process allows clinicians to methodically consider and rule out these possibilities.
The Diagnostic Process
The differential diagnosis typically follows a structured approach:
- Medical history (anamnesis): Gathering information about the patient´s current complaints and past health
- Physical examination: Assessment of clinical signs and findings
- Laboratory tests: Blood work, urinalysis, and other lab investigations
- Imaging studies: Such as X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, or CT scan
- Additional tests: Such as ECG, biopsy, or functional tests
Based on this information, a list of possible diagnoses is compiled and ranked by likelihood. The most probable diagnosis is referred to as the working diagnosis or provisional diagnosis until it is confirmed or excluded.
DD in Medical Documentation
In medical reports, discharge letters, and patient records, the abbreviation DD is often followed by a list of possible conditions. For example: DD: coronary artery disease, pericarditis, musculoskeletal pain. This structured listing promotes transparency and supports continuity of care.
