These enzymes are found in a wide range of body fluids, including blood, saliva, tears, and breast milk.

Types and Mechanisms of Action

Several classes of defensive enzymes exist, each acting through distinct mechanisms:

  • Lysozyme: This enzyme destroys bacterial cell walls by cleaving specific sugar molecules known as peptidoglycans. It is present in saliva, tears, and nasal secretions and is particularly effective against gram-positive bacteria.
  • Peroxidases (e.g., Myeloperoxidase): These enzymes generate reactive oxygen species that cause oxidative damage to pathogens. They are primarily active within white blood cells (leukocytes).
  • Proteases and Nucleases: These enzymes degrade proteins or nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) of pathogens, rendering them non-functional.
  • Complement Enzymes: Within the complement system, enzymatic cascades activate a series of proteins that lead to the lysis (dissolution) of pathogens or flag them for destruction by phagocytic cells.

Distribution and Importance in the Body

Defensive enzymes are distributed throughout numerous tissues and body fluids. Particularly high concentrations are found in:

  • Saliva and oral mucosa (protection against oral infections)
  • Tear fluid (protection of the eye surface)
  • Blood and lymph (systemic immune defense)
  • Breast milk (protection of newborns)
  • Intestinal mucosa (defense against gut pathogens)

They work in close coordination with other immune components such as antibodies, natural killer cells, and phagocytes to provide effective protection for the body.

Clinical Relevance

A deficiency in defensive enzymes or impaired enzyme function can significantly increase susceptibility to infections. Certain conditions, such as myeloperoxidase deficiency, reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill pathogens efficiently. In medicine, defensive enzymes are also used therapeutically -- for example, as antibacterial agents in wound dressings or oral rinses. They also serve as diagnostic biomarkers, since elevated enzyme levels can indicate active infections or inflammatory processes.

Defensive Enzymes and Nutrition

The production and activity of defensive enzymes is supported by a balanced diet. Key micronutrients such as zinc, vitamin C, selenium, and vitamin E are essential for immune enzyme function. Deficiencies in these nutrients can impair the activity of defensive enzymes and weaken the overall immune response.
