Delta-lactone (also written as δ-lactone) refers to a class of cyclic organic compounds belonging to the group of lactones. Lactones are cyclic esters formed by an intramolecular condensation reaction between a hydroxyl group and a carboxyl group within the same molecule. In delta-lactones, the hydroxyl group is located at the fifth carbon atom (delta position) relative to the carboxyl group, resulting in the formation of a six-membered ring.
