Demisexual describes people who only experience sexual attraction after forming a strong emotional bond with another person.
Demisexual is a term used to describe a sexual orientation in which a person experiences sexual attraction only after developing a deep emotional connection with another individual. The word combines the Latin prefix demi- (meaning half) with sexual, reflecting its position on the spectrum between asexuality and allosexuality. Demisexuality is not a choice or a moral stance, but a genuine and natural variation of human sexuality.
Demisexuality is commonly placed within the asexual spectrum (also known as the ace spectrum). People on this spectrum experience sexual attraction rarely, under specific conditions, or not at all. Importantly, demisexuality says nothing about gender preference – a demisexual person may be attracted to people of any gender, provided the emotional prerequisite is met.
The defining characteristic of demisexuality is that an emotional bond must exist before sexual attraction can develop. This bond does not need to be romantic in nature – deep friendships or relationships built on trust and mutual understanding can also serve as the foundation. It is important to note, however, that an emotional bond does not automatically result in sexual attraction; it is simply a necessary condition for it to arise.
Demisexuality is not a medical condition, a religious vow, a lifestyle choice, or a sign of dysfunction. It is a valid expression of human sexuality. It should be distinguished from the following concepts:
Awareness and recognition of demisexuality have grown significantly in recent years, particularly within broader discussions about LGBTQIA+ identities. For individuals who identify as demisexual, having language to describe their experience can be profoundly meaningful for self-acceptance and mental well-being. Research on people within the asexual spectrum indicates that social recognition and access to affirming terminology can positively impact quality of life and psychological health.
Demisexual individuals often form deeply meaningful and fulfilling relationships, as emotional connection is central to their experience of attraction. Romantic partnerships can be just as rich and satisfying as those of allosexual people – the path to intimacy may simply take longer, as it depends on the gradual development of trust and closeness. Open and honest communication about one's orientation can help partners understand each other better and prevent misunderstandings.
