Things worth knowing about "Depression"

Depression is a widespread but often misunderstood mental illness that is characterised not only by persistent depression, but also by a variety of physical and emotional symptoms.

Depression affects a person's thoughts, feelings and behaviour and can significantly impair their quality of life. The most common symptoms of depression include persistent sadness, listlessness, sleep disturbances, loss of interest in activities and persistent exhaustion. In severe cases, suicidal thoughts can also occur.

The causes of depression are varied and range from genetic to environmental and biological factors. One of the most widely accepted theories is the neurotransmitter hypothesis, which states that an imbalance of chemicals in the brain, such as serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, plays a central role in the development of depression. Other factors that can favour depression include chronic stress, trauma, an unhealthy diet or a family history of depression. Hormonal changes, particularly during pregnancy, after childbirth (postpartum depression), during the menopause or in connection with thyroid disorders, can also trigger or exacerbate depression.

Mental illness is often treated with a combination of psychotherapy and medication, e.g. antidepressants. However, there is increasing evidence that proper nutrition and certain micronutrients can play a supportive role in the treatment and prevention of depression.

One important nutrient that is often mentioned in connection with depression is vitamin D. A lack of vitamin D is associated with an increased likelihood of developing depression. The ""sunshine vitamin"" plays an important role in regulating serotonin levels in the brain, a neurotransmitter responsible for mood and well-being. There is evidence that people with low vitamin D levels have an increased risk of depression. An adequate supply of vitamin D, either through sun exposure, diet or supplements, can help to alleviate depressive symptoms.

The B vitamins, particularly vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and folic acid, are also closely linked to mental health. These vitamins are important for the functioning of the nervous system and the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. A lack of B vitamins can have a negative effect on mood and increase depressive symptoms.

L-tryptophan, an amino acid found in protein-rich foods such as poultry, eggs and nuts, is also associated with the regulation of serotonin. L-tryptophan is the precursor of serotonin. The body uses L-tryptophan to produce this important neurotransmitter. This means that a lack of L-tryptophan can also lead to low serotonin levels, which in turn can increase the risk of depressive symptoms. In addition, serotonin is also used in the body to produce melatonin, a hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Therefore, L-tryptophan is also associated with an improvement in sleep quality.

Depression can be detected through various tests, anamnesis interviews and diagnostic tools, with the diagnosis usually being made by a specialist doctor or therapist. However, there is no blood test or rapid test that can reliably confirm depression. Instead, tests and diagnoses are based on an assessment of a person's symptoms, behaviour and mental state.
