Things worth knowing about "diabetes symptoms"

Diabetes symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, and fatigue are common warning signs. Early detection is key to effective treatment and preventing complications.

What Are Diabetes Symptoms?

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by persistently elevated blood sugar levels. Symptoms arise because the body either produces too little insulin (Type 1 diabetes) or cannot use insulin effectively (Type 2 diabetes). Many people notice the first signs only late, as they develop gradually.

Common Symptoms

  • Excessive thirst (polydipsia): The body tries to flush out excess sugar through urine, leading to increased fluid needs.
  • Frequent urination (polyuria): The kidneys filter more glucose from the blood and excrete it with large amounts of water.
  • Fatigue and exhaustion: Since body cells do not receive sufficient energy, affected individuals feel persistently tired.
  • Unexplained weight loss: Especially in Type 1 diabetes, the body breaks down fat and muscle tissue when glucose cannot be utilized.
  • Blurred vision: High blood sugar alters the lens of the eye and can cause visual disturbances.
  • Slow wound healing: Elevated blood sugar levels impair the immune system and circulation, causing wounds to heal more slowly.
  • Tingling or numbness: Nerve damage caused by persistently high blood sugar (diabetic neuropathy) can cause abnormal sensations.
  • Frequent infections: Urinary tract infections and fungal infections occur more often in people with diabetes.

Differences Between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes

In Type 1 diabetes, symptoms usually appear suddenly and prominently, often within weeks. In Type 2 diabetes, signs develop gradually over months or years, so the condition is often only discovered during a routine check-up.

Symptoms in Type 1 Diabetes

  • Rapid weight loss
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Acetone smell on the breath (diabetic ketoacidosis)
  • Loss of consciousness in severe cases

Symptoms in Type 2 Diabetes

  • Often no or only mild symptoms for a long time
  • Fatigue after meals
  • Increased susceptibility to infections
  • Dark skin discoloration (acanthosis nigricans)

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is made through blood tests measuring the fasting blood glucose, the HbA1c value (long-term blood sugar), or the oral glucose tolerance test (oGTT). A fasting blood glucose of 126 mg/dl or higher, or an HbA1c of 6.5% or above, is diagnostic for diabetes.

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience persistent symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, or unexplained weight loss, you should see a doctor promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent serious complications such as heart attack, kidney failure, or blindness.
