Things worth knowing about "Diabetes Values"

Diabetes values such as blood glucose and HbA1c are key measurements used to diagnose and monitor diabetes mellitus in clinical practice.

What Are Diabetes Values?

Diabetes values refer to a set of laboratory measurements and diagnostic parameters used to identify, diagnose, and manage diabetes mellitus. The most important values include the fasting blood glucose, postprandial blood glucose (measured after meals), the HbA1c value (long-term blood sugar), and the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).

Key Diabetes Values Explained

Fasting Blood Glucose

Fasting blood glucose is measured after at least 8 hours without eating or drinking (other than water). It reflects baseline glucose levels in the blood.

  • Normal: below 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L)
  • Prediabetes: 100–125 mg/dL (5.6–6.9 mmol/L)
  • Diabetes: 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher (confirmed on two separate occasions)

Postprandial Blood Glucose

This value is measured 2 hours after a meal and reflects how efficiently the body processes dietary glucose.

  • Normal: below 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L)
  • Prediabetes: 140–199 mg/dL (7.8–11.0 mmol/L)
  • Diabetes: 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) or higher

HbA1c (Long-Term Blood Sugar)

The HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) value reflects the average blood glucose level over the past 2–3 months. It is the primary marker for long-term diabetes monitoring and treatment assessment.

  • Normal: below 5.7% (39 mmol/mol)
  • Prediabetes: 5.7–6.4% (39–47 mmol/mol)
  • Diabetes: 6.5% (48 mmol/mol) or higher
  • Treatment target: typically below 7.0% (53 mmol/mol), adjusted individually

Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)

During an OGTT, the patient drinks a standardized solution containing 75 g of glucose. Blood glucose is measured while fasting and again 2 hours later. This test is particularly used to diagnose type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes.

Random Blood Glucose

A random blood glucose measurement of 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) or higher, combined with classic symptoms of diabetes (such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, and fatigue), is also a recognized diagnostic criterion for diabetes mellitus.

Blood Glucose Self-Monitoring

People with diabetes can monitor their blood glucose levels at home using a glucometer. A small drop of blood (usually from a fingertip) is placed on a test strip for analysis. Modern continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems allow round-the-clock tracking without frequent finger pricks.

Target Values for People with Diabetes

Treatment targets are set individually based on age, comorbidities, and the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). General reference targets according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA):

  • Fasting blood glucose: 80–130 mg/dL
  • Postprandial blood glucose (2h): below 180 mg/dL
  • HbA1c: below 7.0% (individually adjustable)

When to Seek Medical Advice

If blood glucose levels are persistently elevated, or if symptoms such as excessive thirst, fatigue, frequent urination, or unexplained weight loss occur, medical evaluation should be sought promptly. Regular screening is especially recommended for high-risk individuals, including those with obesity, a family history of diabetes, or gestational diabetes.
