Diosmin is a plant-derived flavonoid used to strengthen veins and treat venous disorders such as chronic venous insufficiency and hemorrhoids.
Diosmin is a naturally occurring flavonoid glycoside found primarily in citrus fruits, especially in unripe bitter oranges (Citrus aurantium). It belongs to the subclass of flavones and is widely used in medicine as a venotonic agent. Diosmin is closely related to hesperidin, another citrus flavonoid, and is frequently formulated in combination with it as a standardized pharmaceutical preparation.
Diosmin exerts its effects through several pharmacological mechanisms:
Diosmin is primarily used for the treatment and prevention of venous and lymphatic disorders. Key indications include:
Diosmin is available in the form of tablets, capsules, or granules. Clinical studies commonly use therapeutic doses of 450–900 mg of diosmin per day, often in combination with hesperidin (e.g., as a micronized purified flavonoid fraction containing 90% diosmin and 10% hesperidin). The appropriate dosage should be determined in consultation with a healthcare professional. For acute hemorrhoids, higher initial doses are typically used, followed by a maintenance dose.
Diosmin is generally considered well tolerated. Possible side effects include:
Serious adverse effects are uncommon. However, individuals with known allergies to flavonoids or citrus plants should avoid diosmin-containing products.
Depending on the country and concentration, diosmin is available either as a dietary supplement or as a licensed medicinal product. Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding should only be considered under medical supervision, as the available data are limited. Potential interactions with anticoagulants (blood thinners) and certain cardiac medications have been reported and should be discussed with a physician before use.
Several controlled clinical trials support the efficacy of diosmin, particularly in combination with hesperidin, for chronic venous insufficiency and hemorrhoidal disease. European guidelines on venous disorders (such as those from the European Venous Forum) recognize flavonoids including diosmin as an adjunctive treatment option. Evidence for additional indications such as lymphedema is promising but not yet conclusive.
