Things worth knowing about "E133"

E133 (Brilliant Blue FCF) is a synthetic blue food dye used in foods, beverages, and medicines. It gives products a vivid blue color and is approved in many countries worldwide.

What is E133 (Brilliant Blue FCF)?

E133, commonly known as Brilliant Blue FCF (also called FD&C Blue No. 1 in the United States), is a synthetic food colorant belonging to the triarylmethane dye group. It is widely used to give foods, beverages, confectionery, and cosmetic products a vivid blue hue. The dye is water-soluble and heat-stable, making it suitable for a broad range of industrial and food applications.

Origin and Production

Brilliant Blue FCF is produced synthetically from petrochemical precursors. It has no natural origin and was first developed in the early 20th century. Today, it is one of the most commonly used blue food colorants globally.

Uses in Food and Other Products

E133 can be found in a wide variety of products, including:

  • Candies, sweets, and chewing gum
  • Soft drinks and sports beverages
  • Ice cream and desserts
  • Baked goods and icings
  • Dietary supplements in capsule or tablet form
  • Cosmetics and personal care products
  • Medical applications (e.g., as a tracer dye in certain diagnostic procedures)

Regulatory Approval

In the European Union, E133 is approved under Regulation (EC) No. 1333/2008 on food additives, with specific restrictions on which food categories may contain it. In the United States, it is approved by the FDA as FD&C Blue No. 1 and is considered safe at permitted levels (GRAS status for approved quantities).

Health and Safety Assessment

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated E133 and established an acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 6 mg per kilogram of body weight per day. When used as intended within regulatory limits, it is considered safe for the general population.

Possible Side Effects and Intolerances

In sensitive individuals, the following reactions may occur:

  • Allergic reactions (rare), particularly in individuals with aspirin intolerance
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort with excessive consumption
  • Possible cross-reactions with other synthetic colorants

Children and Hyperactivity

The Southampton Study (2007) investigated the relationship between certain food colorants (in combination with sodium benzoate) and hyperactive behavior in children. As a result, EFSA recommends that products containing these colorants carry a warning label. However, E133 itself was not shown to be a primary contributor to the observed effects in this study.

Labeling Requirements

In the EU, foods containing E133 must list this additive on the ingredients label either by its name Brilliant Blue FCF or its E-number E133. This allows consumers to make informed choices and limit intake if desired.
