Things worth knowing about "E445"

E445 is an approved food additive known as Glycerol Ester of Wood Rosin, used as an emulsifier and weighting agent in flavored beverages.

What is E445?

E445 is the food additive designation for Glycerol Ester of Wood Rosin (GEWR). It is a semi-synthetic substance produced by esterifying purified wood rosin -- derived from pine trees -- with glycerol. E445 is approved in the European Union and in several other countries worldwide, where it is primarily used as an emulsifier, stabilizer, and weighting agent in beverages and chewing gum base.

Origin and Production

The raw material for E445 is rosin (also called colophony), a natural resin extracted from the wood of various pine species. This resin is purified and then chemically reacted with glycerol (a trihydric alcohol) in an esterification process. The resulting product is a viscous, water-insoluble resin with a density slightly higher than that of water. This physical property makes it particularly effective as a weighting and clouding agent in water-based beverages.

Use in Food Products

E445 is mainly used in the following product categories:

  • Flavored beverages and soft drinks: E445 prevents added essential oils (e.g., citrus oils) from floating to the surface and separating from the aqueous phase, helping beverages maintain a uniform, cloudy appearance.
  • Sports drinks and energy drinks: As an emulsifier, E445 keeps fat-soluble flavors and additives evenly suspended in the liquid.
  • Fruit nectars and fruit-flavored drinks: It improves the visual appearance and shelf stability of the product.
  • Chewing gum base: E445 can be used as a component of chewing gum base, contributing to its texture and chewing properties.

Mechanism of Action as Emulsifier and Weighting Agent

Natural citrus-based flavoring oils (e.g., lemon oil or orange oil) have a lower density than water and would quickly rise to the surface of a beverage without a weighting agent. E445 has a higher density than water and is blended with flavoring oils before they are incorporated into beverages. This blending increases the overall density of the oil droplets, bringing them closer to the density of the surrounding liquid, so they remain uniformly distributed rather than separating. This is known as the weighting effect. At the same time, E445 gives the beverage a naturally appearing turbidity or cloudiness.

Regulatory Approval and Maximum Levels

In the European Union, E445 is authorized under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. The permitted maximum level is generally 100 mg/l in flavored beverages. Separate regulations apply to chewing gum base. In the United States, the substance is classified by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) and is permitted in certain beverage applications. Similar regulations exist in other countries based on international Codex Alimentarius standards.

Safety and Health Assessment

E445 has been evaluated by the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) and by the JECFA (Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives). An ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) of 25 mg/kg body weight per day has been established. When used as intended and within approved maximum levels, E445 is considered safe for the general population. No specific allergies or serious adverse effects attributable to E445 have been documented. However, individuals with known hypersensitivity to resins or terpenes should exercise caution.

Labeling

In the EU, food products containing E445 must declare this additive in the ingredient list, either by its E-number E445 or by its descriptive name Glycerol Ester of Wood Rosin.
