E460i – Microcrystalline Cellulose: Uses & Safety
E460i (microcrystalline cellulose) is an approved food additive used as a bulking agent, stabilizer, and anticaking agent in foods and pharmaceuticals.
Things worth knowing about "E460i"
E460i (microcrystalline cellulose) is an approved food additive used as a bulking agent, stabilizer, and anticaking agent in foods and pharmaceuticals.
What is E460i?
E460i refers to microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), a naturally derived substance obtained from plant-based cellulose. Cellulose is the most abundant organic polymer on Earth and forms the structural backbone of plant cell walls. To produce E460i, cellulose extracted from wood pulp or cotton linters is subjected to controlled acid hydrolysis, which removes the amorphous (disordered) regions and leaves behind only the crystalline (ordered) structures. The result is a white, odorless powder that is insoluble in water.
Use in Food Products
E460i is used in the food industry for a variety of technological purposes:
- Bulking agent: Increases volume while reducing calorie content, for example in low-calorie products.
- Stabilizer: Improves texture and consistency of sauces, dressings, and dairy products.
- Anticaking agent: Prevents clumping in powdered products and shredded cheeses.
- Emulsifier and foam stabilizer: Supports the formation and stabilization of foam structures.
- Carrier substance: Used in dietary supplements and tablets as a carrier for active ingredients.
Typical food products that may contain E460i include shredded cheese, baked goods, desserts, diet products, ice cream, and dietary supplements.
Use in Pharmaceuticals
In the pharmaceutical industry, microcrystalline cellulose is one of the most widely used excipients. It serves as a binder in tablet manufacturing (direct compression), as a filler for capsules, and as a carrier matrix for active pharmaceutical ingredients. MCC improves the flow properties of powders and ensures uniform distribution of active substances in solid dosage forms.
Safety and Tolerability
E460i is considered safe for human consumption. Since microcrystalline cellulose cannot be digested by the human body, it passes through the gastrointestinal tract largely unchanged. It has been evaluated as safe by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and is approved in the European Union without a specific quantitative limit (quantum satis) for many food categories. No acceptable daily intake (ADI) value has been established, as no safety concern was identified due to its non-digestible nature.
Individuals with known hypersensitivity to cellulose-based products should avoid relevant products, although allergic reactions to E460i are extremely rare. At very high intake levels, E460i may, like other dietary fibers, have a mild laxative effect.
Distinction from E460ii
E460 encompasses two sub-forms: E460i (microcrystalline cellulose) and E460ii (powdered cellulose). While E460i is produced by acid hydrolysis and has a crystalline structure, E460ii is obtained by mechanical grinding and has an amorphous structure. Both substances are chemically identical (pure cellulose) but differ in their physical properties and technological applications.
Regulatory Status
E460i is approved in the European Union under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. It is also recognized by the FDA in the United States as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe), and has been assessed as safe by the JECFA (Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives).
