Things worth knowing about "E463"

E463 (Hydroxypropylcellulose) is an approved food additive used as a thickener, stabilizer, and emulsifier. It is a chemically modified derivative of natural cellulose.

What is E463?

E463 is the European approval number for Hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC), a semi-synthetic food additive. It is a chemically modified derivative of natural cellulose, in which hydroxypropyl groups are incorporated into the cellulose structure. E463 appears as a white to off-white, odorless and tasteless powder that is soluble in cold water but gels upon heating.

Origin and Production

Hydroxypropylcellulose is derived from plant-based cellulose, primarily sourced from cotton fibers or wood pulp. Through a chemical reaction with propylene oxide, hydroxypropyl groups are attached to the cellulose chain. The resulting product is a non-ionic polymer available in various viscosity grades.

Use as a Food Additive

In the food industry, E463 serves several technological purposes:

  • Thickener: Increases the viscosity of food products and provides a creamy texture.
  • Stabilizer: Prevents the separation of ingredients in emulsions and suspensions.
  • Emulsifier: Helps bind immiscible liquids such as oil and water.
  • Binder: Improves texture and shape stability of food products.
  • Film-former: Used for coating tablets and capsules in the pharmaceutical industry.

Typical applications include baked goods, sauces, dressings, desserts, ice cream, dietary supplements, and pharmaceutical preparations.

Safety and Health Assessment

E463 is considered safe by regulatory authorities. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated hydroxypropylcellulose and classified it as safe for use. It is barely absorbed in the human digestive tract and is largely excreted unchanged, as it functions as a non-digestible fiber. It is therefore well tolerated by most people.

Tolerance and Compatibility

Since E463 is not broken down by the body and does not enter the bloodstream, systemic toxic effects are not expected. At very high intake levels, mild gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating or loose stools may occasionally occur, as the substance acts similarly to an insoluble dietary fiber. For most consumers, however, E463 is well tolerated.

Suitability for Special Diets

Hydroxypropylcellulose is of plant origin and is therefore generally considered suitable for vegan and vegetarian diets. It is also gluten-free. As it is a heavily processed derivative, its use in organic products is typically restricted or not permitted.

Legal Framework in the EU

In the European Union, E463 is permitted under Regulation (EC) No. 1333/2008 on food additives. Its use is restricted to specific food categories and is subject to defined maximum levels or the principle of quantum satis (as much as is technologically necessary).
